Poly(sodium-p-styrenesulfonate) is a polymer that is synthesized by the reaction of hydrochloric acid with sodium styrene sulfonate. It has been used as a catalyst in wastewater treatment and as a stabilizing agent for cellulose. This polymer can be synthesized by electrochemical oxidation of p-xylene or through thermal decomposition of sodium p-benzylbenzenesulfonate. Poly(sodium-p-styrenesulfonate) is stable in basic solutions, but it reacts with acids to form polymers with lower Mw values. This polymer has high values for nitrogen atoms, which may be due to their ability to generate free radicals.
