This dye is composed of two subunits, which are identical proteins with a molecular weight of about 33 kDa each. It is the chromophore that provides the fluorescent properties. The B-Phycoerythrin molecule can be prepared by a preparative method and purified by chromatographic methods. This natural dye can be disrupted by light exposure, making it an excellent tool for studying phototoxicity, photostability and photoinduced reactions. B-phycoerythrin subunits are dodecyl chains that form hexamers in solution. When exposed to light, the chromophore may break down into its constituent parts, disrupting the molecule and rendering it incapable of fluorescence.
