It has been used to treat wastewater containing chlorides, adsorbing the chloride ions onto its surface and thereby desorbing them from the water. In addition, potassium perfluoroheptanoate has been used as a coagulant for wastewater treatment. It can be synthesized from fluorine gas and potassium hydroxide by laminar flow evaporation.
