Pheophorbide a is a mixture of two diastereomers that has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against squamous carcinoma cells. It also inhibits the ATP-binding cassette transporter and induces autophagy in human HL-60 leukemia cells. Pheophorbide a binds to the mitochondrial membrane potential, and can be used as an alternative treatment for cancer. This molecule also prevents the formation of chlorophyll a., which is necessary for photosynthesis. Pheophorbide a also has metal chelating properties, which may be due to its ability to bind copper ions and prevent copper-mediated oxidation reactions.
