Pancreatic polypeptide is a protein that is secreted by cells in the pancreas. It has been found to have immunomodulatory properties and plays a role in regulating corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) secretion from the hypothalamus. Pancreatic polypeptide is expressed in pancreatic tissue, but also in other tissues such as the postrema, which is located at the base of the brain near the entrance of the central nervous system. Pancreatic polypeptide has been shown to bind to CRH receptors on neurons and inhibit their activity. This protein may be involved in cellular immune responses, as it has been shown to stimulate T cell proliferation and suppress macrophage activation.
