Physalaemin is a substance that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-infectious properties. It is used to study the role of peptide hormones in cell lysis, autoimmune diseases, and cardiac effects. Physalaemin also binds to the neurokinin-1 receptor, which may be responsible for its effects on locomotor activity. It inhibits calcium binding and enzyme activity in papillary muscle cells, as well as calcium binding in trigeminal nerve cells. Physalaemin is a model system for studying the function of substance P and other neuropeptides that are involved in the pathology of infectious diseases.
