1-Phenyl-2-chloropropane is a racemic mixture of two enantiomers that has been used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other drugs. It is a colorless liquid that has a sweet odor. 1-Phenyl-2-chloropropane can be synthesized by reacting phenylacetone with chloroethane and hydrochloric acid, or from benzoyl chloride and chloroethane. The elimination reactions of 1-phenyl-2-chloropropane are catalyzed by the presence of water and heat, forming phenol and an alkyl chloride. This reaction occurs spontaneously at room temperature in the presence of moisture. The hydroxide ion is also required for this reaction to occur, which may be supplied by sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. 1-Phenyl-2-chloropropane reacts with peroxide to form phenol and hydrogen peroxide gas. This reaction can
