1,1,1,3,3-Pentafluorobutane is an organic solvent that is used as a reaction medium for the production of hydrogen chloride and hydrogen fluoride. It can also be used to remove residual chlorine from substances such as hydrochloric acid. 1,1,1,3,3-Pentafluorobutane has a viscosity of about 10 cP at room temperature and is chemically stable with respect to hydrogen chloride. 1,1,1,3,3-Pentafluorobutane does not react with water or oxygen and does not form explosive compounds when mixed with air. This compound also has low toxicity in humans and animals.
