Perfluorodecanesulfonyl fluoride (PFDSF) is a sulfonate surfactant that is used in research and as an industrial chemical. PFDSF is used to create hydrophobic surfaces and to reduce emissions during the manufacture of fluoropolymers. PFDSF is also used as a monomer for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which has low surface energy. When PFDSF is mixed with water, it dissociates into its constituent molecules, perfluorodecane sulfonic acid and fluoride ions. This property provides a means of measuring PFDSF concentrations in the environment.
