Potassium phenethyltrifluoroborate (PPTB) is a molecule that inhibits the growth of bacteria by inhibiting the synthesis of essential cellular molecules, such as nucleic acids and proteins. PPTB binds to sulfhydryl groups on proteins, preventing their function and inhibiting bacterial growth. PPTB has been shown to be effective against Gram-positive bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium perfringens, although is not active against acid-fast bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex. PPTB has shown anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
