Potassium 2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropanoate is a solvent with a long history of use in organic chemistry. It is used as an alkylating agent to substitute the hydroxyl group of a compound with an alkylthio group. Potassium 2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropanoate has been shown to have antagonistic properties against solvents and haloalkyls and can be used as a reagent in the synthesis of benzyl esters. It is also used in x-ray crystallography to study the structure and properties of alkali metal complexes. Potassium 2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropanoate reacts with chromene under acidic conditions to form unsaturated heterocycles. This reaction can be mediated by nitro groups.
