Perfluoro-tert-butanol is a compound that has been shown to have strong antibacterial properties. It has been found to be effective against Gram-positive bacteria and at least one strain of Gram-negative bacteria. The antibacterial activity of the compound is due to its ability to cause a frequency shift in the bacterial enzyme catalysis by protonating the substrate, thus inhibiting the enzyme’s activity. This compound also has been shown to inhibit trifluoroacetic acid and sodium citrate ester hydrochloride, which are two enzymes that may contribute to bacterial growth. Perfluoro-tert-butanol also has been shown to be toxic for rat kidney cells and exhibited toxicity in urine samples from humans.
