It binds to 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. 2-(((6-Bromo-3H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridin-2-yl)thio)methyl)benzonitrile has been shown to be effective against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), although it is not active against acid fast bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex.
