Quinuclidine hydrochloride (QDHC) is a drug that has been used for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease and chronic bronchitis. It belongs to a class of pyrimidine compounds called quinuclidines. QDHC inhibits the activity of fatty acid receptors, which are involved in the inflammatory response in certain cells. QDHC is also a prodrug that is hydrolyzed by hydrochloric acid to form quinuclidine, an active form that can bind to nucleophilic sites on proteins. This binding causes conformational changes in the proteins and can lead to inhibition of protein synthesis and cell death. The drug has no effect on healthy cells because they lack fatty acid receptors. Quinuclidine hydrochloride has been shown to be effective against diabetic neuropathy, which may be due to its ability to inhibit acetylcholine release from nerve endings.
