Quinolin-3-ylmethanol (QM) is a fluorescent compound that has been used as an antibacterial agent. It has been shown to have strong binding affinity for bacterial cell walls and is able to permeate the cell wall by protonation of the phenolic hydroxyl group. QM also has the ability to react with reactive functional groups in bacterial cell walls and can cause crosslinking. The fluorescence of QM is quenched when it binds to bacteria, so it can be used as a probe for determining the effectiveness of antibiotics. Quinolin-3-ylmethanol's high lipophilicity allows it to penetrate cancer cells more effectively than other compounds. This property makes it potentially useful in cancer therapy and imaging.
