4-Quinazolinecarbonitrile is a nucleophile that can be used in the synthesis of an antigens. The active methylene group on the molecule allows it to react with Grignard reagents. The reaction products are usually amides, chlorides, or other organic compounds. 4-Quinazolinecarbonitrile is also able to form a double bond with malonate, which can be used as a starting material for the synthesis of propiophenone. This compound has been shown to have a genotype-specific effect on red blood cells and can be used as an antigen for blood groups A and B.
