Quetiapine is a psychotropic drug that belongs to the class of atypical antipsychotics. It is used for the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder. Quetiapine has been shown to work by blocking serotonin receptors (5-HT2) in the brain. The effect of quetiapine on serotonin receptors is dose dependent, with low doses producing an antidepressant effect and high doses producing a sedating effect. Quetiapine sulfoxide (QSOX) is an active metabolite of quetiapine that has been found to be more potent than its parent compound in binding to 5-HT2 receptors. QSOX has also been found to be present in human serum and urine samples, as well as breast milk samples from lactating mothers. QSOX can be detected in plasma using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) with a limit of quantification (LOQ
