(+)-Quisqualic acid is a non-competitive inhibitor of the uptake of glutamate, the primary excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. It blocks the ion channels that are responsible for sodium and potassium transport in nerve cells. It has been shown to increase the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which inhibits neuronal activity, and decrease glutamate levels in vivo analysis. (+)-Quisqualic acid has also been shown to have anticancer properties by inhibiting tumor growth and inducing apoptosis. This compound also sensitizes receptors to react to lower concentrations of GABA, glutamate, or other agonists.
