Quinoline-3-boronic acid pinacol ester (QBPE) is a fluorescent compound that has been shown to be an effective antifungal agent against dermatophytes. QBPE inhibits the growth of fungi by binding to their cell walls and disrupting their membrane integrity. QBPE is also able to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, although it has low activity against this bacterium. The mechanism of action for QBPE may be due to its ability to react with singlet molecular oxygen and produce reactive oxygen species such as superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl radicals. These reactive molecules can damage DNA from both the fungus or bacteria leading to cell death.
