Description

Praziquantel is a drug that is used to treat schistosomiasis, which is an infection caused by a parasite. It has been shown to be effective against schistosomes in clinical trials. Praziquantel is a quinoline derivative and acts by inhibiting the synthesis of ATP within the parasite's cells, causing paralysis and death. Praziquantel can be synthesized from 6-quinolinemethanol, which can be converted into pyridine with diazotisation followed by oxidation with sodium hypochlorite. This process results in pyridinium hydrochloride that can then be reacted with various compounds (e.g., amines) to yield different derivatives of praziquantel.
