Quassin is a natural product that is obtained from the bark of the South American tree Quebracho. It has been used as a reference material and in research and development for its potential use in natural products. Quassin can be found in plant materials, such as the leaves of Eupatorium capillifolium, which are used to produce quassinoids. Quassin contains three stereoisomers: isoquinasin, neoquassin, and quassin. These three stereoisomers are very similar in structure and activity. They have been used as standards for HPLC to identify other related compounds. The three stereoisomers also have anti-inflammatory properties that have been shown by screening secondary metabolites against the cyclooxygenase enzyme COX-2.
