Product Information
The mechanism of the Ru-catalyzed hydrogenation of 2-butynoic acid to butyric acid is a three-step process. The first step involves the addition of a proton and an electron from H2O to the substrate, forming a carbonyl compound. The second step involves the transfer of a hydride ion from Ru to the carbonyl compound, forming an alcohol. The third step involves the elimination of H2O with simultaneous formation of a double bond and release of CO2. This reaction has been shown to be catalytic in acidic conditions, recycling Ru and producing no emissions. The active catalyst is (S)-Ru(OAc)2(BINAP). The major functionalities are mesoporous silica and tiglic acid, which enhance reactivity by providing pairwise interactions between substrates and catalyst.
