RAC is an α-acid glycoprotein that binds to ibuprofen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and prevents its absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. It has been shown to bind to carbamazepine, a drug used for the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder, as well as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) reagents. The matrix effect is a phenomenon that occurs when RAC binds with ibuprofen in solution. This interaction alters the solubility of ibuprofen, which may lead to increased bioavailability. RAC interacts with alkanoic acid through hydrogen bonding interactions and can be used for sample preparation prior to analysis by preparative high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). RAC also has been shown to have carcinogenic effects in studies on rats exposed over their lifetime.
