Description

Sertraline is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor that is used to treat depression and other mental disorders. It is also used to help control chronic bronchitis, as well as inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. Sertraline blocks the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain, which leads to increased levels of serotonin in the synapse. This effect on serotonergic neurons can increase the release of dopamine and norepinephrine. Sertraline has been shown to have reactive properties against cancer cells, but its role in cancer prevention or treatment has not been fully established. The drug does not seem to be associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease.
