Rasagiline is a drug that has been approved for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. It acts by increasing the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps to regulate movement. Rasagiline is also neuroprotective and has been shown to promote neuronal survival. It protects against neuronal damage induced by oxidative stress and glutamate toxicity in cell culture experiments, as well as protecting against mitochondrial membrane potential loss in vitro. Rasagiline may be used as an adjunct therapy for autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, or psoriasis. The drug inhibits enzymes involved in the detoxification pathway and therefore can increase toxic substances in the body if not monitored carefully.
