9-cis-Retinal is a protein that is an essential component of the visual cycle. It is synthesized by the retina and converted to 11-cis-retinal, which is then used in the visual system to produce pigments. Retinal binds to a class of proteins known as ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, which are responsible for transporting retinol from the blood into tissues. The ABC transporter recognizes 9-cis-retinal and transports it into cells. This process requires energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). In addition, 9-cis-Retinal has been shown to be involved in immune response, lymphocyte transformation, and cancer cell proliferation.
