Roseoflavin is a redox cofactor that is synthesized in the mitochondria. It is an electron carrier and can reduce molecular oxygen to water when bound to two cytochrome c molecules. Roseoflavin has been shown to be an important component of the electron transport system in cells, which requires a redox potential of -200 mV or lower. Roseoflavin also regulates transcriptional regulation by binding to iron-sulfur clusters and may inhibit bacterial growth through hydrogen bonding interactions with bacterial RNA polymerase.
