Ristocetin is a hydrogen-bonding drug that binds to the sodium citrate ion in the active site of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It is used as a diagnostic agent for various diseases by detecting the presence of erythrocyte agglutinins, which are produced by some infectious diseases. Ristocetin has also been shown to have antibiotic properties against Mycoplasma and Chlamydia species. In vitro studies have demonstrated that ristocetin can inhibit murine sarcoma virus replication and induce apoptosis. Structural analysis has revealed that the pyrazole ring in ristocetin interacts with the methyl ethyl group on riboflavin, which induces structural changes in riboflavin and inhibits its enzymatic activity.
