Rhodanine is a drug that binds to dopamine β-hydroxylase, an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of dopamine to norepinephrine. Rhodanine has significant cytotoxicity and minimal toxicity, with metal hydroxides as its major toxic metabolite. Rhodanine has been shown to have receptor activity in vitro and synchronous fluorescence in vivo. It also has chemiluminescence properties that are sensitive to redox potentials in biological environments, including human serum and erythrocytes. Rhodanine can be used for the treatment of infectious diseases such as malaria and HIV/AIDS.
