Ribonuclease A is a basic protein that has significant cytotoxicity. It is found in the reaction solution of cells and is involved in the production of RNA. Ribonuclease A has been shown to be effective in the treatment of bowel disease, as well as solid tumours. The mechanism by which ribonuclease A kills tumor cells is not yet fully understood, but it may be due to mitochondrial membrane potential disruption and l-carnosine-mediated neuronal death. Ribonuclease A also has biochemical properties that include inhibition of MMP-9 activity, which may lead to an increased lifespan or better quality of life.
