Ralfinamide is a potent and selective blocker of the neuronal sodium channel. It has been shown to inhibit viral replication in cells infected with HIV-1, HSV-2, and vesicular stomatitis virus. Ralfinamide also produces a dose-dependent inhibition of rotarod performance in mice and inhibits acid formation in rat stomachs. This drug has been shown to have pressor effects at high doses and causes whole-cell recordings from neurons to be more sensitive to depolarization by an increase in intracellular chloride ions. Ralfinamide mesylate is a crystalline polymorph that is more soluble than ralfinamide hydrochloride, making it more suitable for oral administration.
