Succinimide is a low-potency, acidic antimicrobial agent that is active against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It is rapidly hydrolyzed in aqueous solutions to form succinic acid and ammonia. Succinimide has been shown to have antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant staphylococci, including MRSA strains. The mechanism of action of succinimide may be due to its ability to inhibit the activity of the enzyme P450. Succinimide also has an affinity for molybdenum, which may contribute to its antimicrobial activity.
