Sodium peroxide is a compound with the chemical formula NaO2. It is a white solid that is soluble in water and reacts with potassium dichromate to produce hydrogen peroxide. Sodium peroxide decomposes to form water vapor and sodium salts when heated, which can be used as an analytical method for determining the purity of hydrogen peroxide. The thermal expansion coefficient of sodium peroxide has been determined using a variety of analytical methods, including plasma mass spectrometry. Sodium peroxide also has antimicrobial properties and can be used as an alternative to chlorine for disinfection in water treatment plants. This compound is usually made from sodium chloride and potassium oxide by reaction with zirconium oxide in the presence of hydroxide or oxygen gas as an oxidation catalyst.
