Sodium 1-propanesulfonate is a chemical compound that is used as an intermediate in the production of hydrochloric acid. It has been shown to inhibit the influenza virus, and can be used as a reagent for the manufacture of monoclonal antibodies. Sodium 1-propanesulfonate reacts with hydrochloric acid to form sodium chloride and hydrogen sulfide gas, which is then reacted with sodium hydroxide to produce sodium sulfite. Sodium 1-propanesulfonate has been shown to bind to viral hemagglutinin and neuraminidase, which are proteins on the surface of influenza viruses. These proteins play a role in binding the virus to cells in order for it to infect them.
