Somatostatin-28 H-Ser-Ala-Asn-Ser-Asn-Pro-Ala-Met-Ala-Pro-Arg-Glu-Arg-Lys-Ala-Gly (Disulfide bond) is a peptide hormone that is produced in the body by different tissues, including the pancreas. Somatostatin inhibits the release of various hormones, including growth hormone and insulin. It also has been shown to inhibit cell proliferation, tumor growth and angiogenesis in vitro. Somatostatin is used to diagnose diseases such as acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis and prostate cancer. The somatostatin analog octreotide has been shown to reduce symptoms of diarrhea in patients with AIDS.
