3-Sulfoalanine is an amino acid that has been shown to inhibit the activity of enzymes such as glutamate decarboxylase and alkaline phosphatase. It has also been shown to induce neuronal death in vitro, which may be due to its ability to react with cellular proteins, including glutathione. 3-Sulfoalanine has been found to have a protective effect on liver lesions in vivo, although it is not yet known how this is mediated. In vitro assays have shown that 3-sulfoalanine inhibits the activation of transfer reactions by reacting with the enzyme sephadex g-100. This reaction leads to a decrease in the production of reactive oxygen species, which could lead to cell death. 3-Sulfoalanine has also been shown to have pharmacological effects in vivo, but these effects are not yet fully understood.
