Sodium 4-methylpiperazine-1-carbodithioate is a ligand that binds to the magnetic iron oxide particles and reacts with them to form a stable complex. This compound is used in the dilution method for determining the concentration of gram-negative bacteria. The magnetic properties of this compound make it possible to detect bacterial colonies on agar plates using a magnetometer, which can be used at temperatures between 4 and 45°C. Sodium 4-methylpiperazine-1-carbodithioate has also been shown to have antileukemic activity against human leukemia cells in vitro.
