Sodium mercaptopyruvate dihydrate is a drug that belongs to the group of reaction products and is used for the treatment of chronic bronchitis. It is a modified form of pyruvic acid and can be converted back to pyruvic acid by rhodanese, which is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of pyruvate to acetyl-CoA. Sodium mercaptopyruvate dihydrate inhibits cyclase activity in liver cells, thereby inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, which are important inflammatory mediators. This agent also has antioxidant properties, as it reacts with nitroprusside to form 3-bromopyruvic acid. The high resistance and degradability of this drug make it suitable for use in patients with autoimmune diseases such as diabetes mellitus or rheumatoid arthritis.
