- Sodium bromite (NaBrO2)
Sodium bromite is an ionic compound that can be used as a disinfectant. It is a red-brown solid with a very low solubility in water. When dissolved in water, it reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce chlorine gas and sodium chloride. Sodium bromite has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against bacteria, viruses, and fungi. It can be used for disinfection of surfaces and equipment by contact or by immersion and for the treatment of wastewater. The bactericidal effects of sodium bromite are due to its ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). Sodium bromite has also been shown to be effective against multidrug resistant strains of bacteria such as Acinetobacter baumannii. This property may be attributed to the fact that sodium bromite generates ROS through the oxidation of pyrazoles present in the bacterial cell wall.
