Synadenol is a natural compound that has been shown to inhibit the replication of viruses in tissue culture and to inhibit the synthesis of fatty acids in plants. Synadenol has also been shown to inhibit human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) by competing with ethyl diazoacetate for enzyme catalysis. This inhibition is irreversible, which may be due to an interaction between the phosphate group and the amino acid lysine in HIV-1. Synadenol also inhibits carnitine palmitoyltransferase, an enzyme that is involved in mitochondrial beta-oxidation of fatty acids.
Synadenol is orally bioavailable and can be used as a potential therapeutic agent against viruses, such as herpes simplex virus and HIV-1.
