Sodium cumenesulfonate is a hydrated form of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) that has been stabilized with the addition of an organic compound. It is a strong oxidant, and is used as a disinfectant and deodorizing agent in water treatment. Sodium cumenesulfonate has synergistic effects when combined with amines or n-oxides, leading to the rapid decomposition of these substances. The photoelectrochemical oxidation of sodium cumenesulfonate has been shown to be efficient at mineralization and removal of impurities such as ethylene.
