Strophanthidin digitoxoside is a natural compound found in the leaves of plants from the genus Strophanthus. It has been shown to be effective against cervical cancer and is being studied for its potential as an antitumour drug. Strophanthidin digitoxoside induces apoptosis in human cervical cancer cells by decreasing mitochondrial membrane potential and inducing DNA fragmentation. This compound also inhibits the proliferation of cardiac myocytes and causes an increase in the level of cAMP, which leads to a reduction in receptor cell function.
