Sodium hexametaphosphate is a white, water-soluble salt that is often used as an emulsifier and sequestrant. It is the sodium salt of hexametaphosphoric acid and has a molecular weight of 144.097. It can be used for the preparation of benzalkonium chloride, which has been shown to be effective in reducing bacterial contamination on biological samples. Sodium hexametaphosphate also has a strong affinity for polyphosphates, which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties when applied topically or taken orally. Zirconium oxide nanoparticles coated with sodium hexametaphosphate are useful as catalysts in organic synthesis reactions and may be able to improve the efficiency of conversion of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs into their active form.
