Selenourea is a synthetic compound that can be produced in two ways, as a particle or as an organic molecule. It is synthesized by the reaction of selenium and hydrochloric acid, with the reaction proceeding via selenocarbonyl compounds. The x-ray crystal structure of selenourea has been determined and it has been shown to react with nitrogen and hydrogen atoms to form new chemical species. Selenourea has been shown to have anticancer properties in vivo and in vitro, with one study showing that it inhibited cancer cell proliferation by altering gene expression. Selenourea also inhibits the growth of tumor cells through a mechanism involving a protein called thp-1, which is involved in immune responses.
