Sulfathiazole sodium sesquihydrate is an antibacterial drug that is used to treat infections caused by Clostridium perfringens and other bacteria. Sulfathiazole sodium sesquihydrate works by inhibiting the synthesis of folic acid, which is needed for the production of bacterial proteins. This drug has been shown to be effective against mastitis in cows and sinusitis in humans. Sulfathiazole sodium sesquihydrate may also be used for the treatment of necropsy lesions in horses, as well as throat infections in humans. The onset of symptoms usually occurs after a few days or weeks, but can occur within hours. Symptoms include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, distal muscle weakness and respiratory distress. In some cases this drug can cause death due to neurological problems (distal myopathy).
