Selenium tetrachloride is a reactive, thermally unstable substance that is used in the production of selenium. It reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce hydrogen selenide and hydrochloric acid. Selenium tetrachloride has been shown to cause genotoxic effects in mice and also produces acid when exposed to water vapor. The particle size of this compound ranges from 0.3 to 1 micrometers. Selenium tetrachloride has been found in coordination geometry, which is determined by the oxidation state of the metal ion and its bonding with ligands such as water molecules or halides ions. This substance has been found to have a coordination geometry of octahedral (8) for the [SeCl] anion and tetrahedral (4) for the [SeH] cation.
