Selenium bromide is a compound that contains selenium and bromine. It is used in organic synthesis for the asymmetric synthesis of β-unsaturated ketones and phenyl groups. Selenium bromide has been shown to be an effective treatment for inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Selenium bromide is synthesized by reacting mercuric chloride with a hydroxy group containing molecule in a reaction vessel to form mercury selenate. The mercury selenate can be converted into selenium bromide with the addition of carbon tetrachloride and hydrobromic acid.
