Sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate is a sodium salt that has been used as an antidote for cyanide poisoning. It is also used in biochemical reactions to reduce the oxidation potential of metal ions such as potassium dichromate, sodium citrate, and hydrogen peroxide. It has been shown to be effective against experimental models of brain cancer and in histological analyses of mouse tumours. Sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate is stable in solution at room temperature but undergoes phase transition at higher temperatures. This phase transition can be used to monitor the reaction system or as a trigger for a reaction. The redox potential of sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate is high enough to oxidize hydrogen peroxide and other peroxides.
