Sodium heptanoate is a sodium salt of heptanoic acid. It is an inorganic acid that has a pH of less than 7. Sodium heptanoate is used as a titration reagent in the determination of fatty acids and can be used to prepare samples for deuterium isotope effect studies, which measure the degree of unsaturation in fatty acids. This compound has been shown to have hydroxyl groups and reduce mitochondrial membrane potential, leading to increased energy metabolism. Sodium heptanoate also suppresses patterning and alters the concentration of fatty acids by inhibiting acyl-CoA synthase activity.
