- Speciociliatin
Speciociliatine is a nitrogen-containing natural product with a potent anti-inflammatory activity. It is the major active component of the plant Speciogyna mairei. This compound inhibits inflammatory mediators, such as leukotrienes and prostaglandins, by binding to their receptors. It also has a matrix effect on the cells of the synovial membrane, which may be responsible for its analgesic effects. The dosing of speciociliatine is dependent on its type of application, with higher doses being required for topical use than for oral consumption. Speciociliatine has been shown to be safe in humans up to a dose of 2 g/day, but it can cause side effects including nausea, diarrhea and vomiting at higher doses. Speciociliatine can be detected in urine samples using an analytical method involving gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).
